I’m not going to stop writing about TV for Blogcritics because of the strike – the only payment I get is the pleasure of writing, and giving that up is too much of a sacrifice to show my solidarity – but in honour of the WGAers, I’ve peppered this post with as many of the writers’ names as possible. Heh. It’s a long-winded examination of how religion is treated in the series:
I should add that Barbara Barnett and CindyC have begun writing weekly House episode reviews for Blogcritics this season, so the show is well-served on that site despite my abdication. Check ’em out, House fans.
Excellent article!!!
“What I have difficulty with is the whole concept of belief”(…) “Faith isn’t based on logic and experience.”
That’s my “problem” with religion as well, just the way my mind works, I need proof, but like House I do have the very rare occasional doubting moment in which I go ‘what if….’
For an atheist/non religious peron I think I’m quite nice too *lol*, but I’ve got one other problem with religion; people trying to convince me theirs is the right one. I’m perfectly happy for them to believe X, but don’t force it down my throat – I much prefer a mutual respect for each others’ opion/belief..but often that’s just not happening.
I’d better go do something productive now before this becomes a really long rant.
No quiero escribir nada largo que tengas que traducir, pero no puedo dejar de decirte qué fantástico me pareció tu artículo. Sobran más palabras, la discusión en Blogcritics es inperdible.
Tremendous breakdown of that thread within the show, Diane.
And, I agree – you are nice for an atheist.
I think you know I’m a Christian. I hope you know that I jest when I say that “you’re nice for an atheist.” We each find our own way through the world. My prayer (if you’ll pardon the expression) is that we all find the right one, whatever that may be.
Anyway, I find the religion in HOUSE fascinating. Despite the main character’s avowed atheism, it is probably the most religious show currently on TV. Not in a pound-it-down-your-throat and you’d-better-believe-my-way-of-thinking fashion, but in the sheer amount of words given over to seriously asking important questions concerning our relationship to God (or whatever other word some of us might use to describe the indescribable.)
Sorry – very wordy. Good article. Thanks!
Thanks guys! Julia doesn’t want to write a long comment I have to translate (but I like the practice, Julia, or I just wouldn’t translate) but she likes the article and says the discussion on Blogcritics is unmissable. I was a little worried it was going to get messy, what with religion being the topic and all, but it’s ended up being interesting and respectful.
You’re a nice person for a Christian, Suldog 😉 Yes, I know you’re joking and obviously I am too. I think whatever someone’s beliefs, the ability to respect someone else’s is more a sign of a good person than their specific beliefs.
Wow, that was a convoluted sentence – I’m too tired to think straight.
